About the course

If you have an eye for detail, a head for finances and the drive to study for a hands-on career, working as a quantity surveyor will suit you perfectly. This course gives you the essential skills you need to work in the construction industry in this important role.

Quantity surveyors are the financial controllers of a construction project and are vital members of any construction team. The value engineering element of the role is often central to the survival of the company when it comes to ensuring the work is completed to the satisfaction of all parties in the contract; it meets all regulations and requirements; and it keeps within its budget.

In your first year of the course, you learn the core elements of quantity surveying such as measurement, surveying and management; regulations, cost, quality and inspection; and sustainable technologies. As you progress, you focus on putting learnt knowledge into practice, with an industry-standard approach to cost-effective production, technical skills and project development. Units may include building technology; contract administration and control; and materials and supply chains.

This course has the option to be taken over four years which includes a year placement in industry. Undertaking a year in industry has many benefits. You gain practical experience and build your CV, as well as being a great opportunity to sample a profession and network with potential future employers.

There is no tuition fee for the placement year enabling you to gain an extra year of experience for free.

With our guidance and support you’ll get up to speed within one year, and will be ready to seamlessly progress on to undergraduate study at Bedfordshire.

The Foundation Year provides an opportunity to build up your academic writing skills and numeracy, and will also cover a range of subject specific content to fully prepare you for entry to an Undergraduate degree.

This is an integrated four-year degree, with the foundation year as a key part of the course. You will need to successfully complete the Foundation Year to progress on to the first year of your bachelor’s degree.

Course Leader - David Jazani

David Jazani obtained his BSc in Architectural Engineering from Milwaukee School of Engineering, Wis., USA in June 1981. During his years in USA he has also worked in Estate Management and completed additional studies in Fire Safety, Health and Safety and (Fortran) programming.

He became involved in education purely by chance and as a result completed PGCE at University of Wales, from there he became involved with various colleges, eventually ending in Barnfield College in 1999 and ÑÇÉ«ÊÓƵ in 2006.

How will you be assessed?


A range of assessment methods are used throughout the course. The types of assessment used range from practical work that assesses the practical application of knowledge and concepts gained in lectures and seminars and also from learning acquired during self-study to presentation and report based assessments. A lot of work is expected to be produced through various case studies, this is all encompassed in progressive development of skills. Time controlled activities are also utilised to allow the students to experience and adjust to the industry requirements. Some assessments such as land surveying are weather dependant and allowances for this have been built into the assessment schedule.

At level 4 you are assessed on your understanding of the fundamental concepts of construction industry operation, measurement of materials and production technologies. You are required to comprehend the basic range of regulations which form the foundations of the industry operation and will be assessed on your ability to articulate such concepts in a coherent manner and apply these to the development, in a variety of case study based briefs. For example, you will learn about materials properties/use for modular construction.

At level 5 you are assessed on your ability to apply the your knowledge and skills introduced in level 4 through further study and development on industry-standard approach to cost effective production, means of tracking materials and rate of production. You should also be able to demonstrate the inter-relationships between technical skills of teams involved in project development. For example, you will be asked to produce materials quantities and costs related to case studies and suggest efficiency improvements.

At level 6 you will be required to demonstrate independent thinking and initiative. This may be in the form of analysing and criticising current practice and theory in the field of construction production. In all cases, you will be expected to demonstrate your awareness of the major theories, practices, environmental, sustainability and cost/value engineering of the discipline. You will progress from well-defined briefs to more open-ended and challenging assessments, which culminate in your major project - the honours project where you will be given freedom to develop a topic of your own choice.

The full-time standard undergraduate tuition fee for the Academic Year 2025/26 is £9,250 per year. You can apply for a loan from the Government to help pay for your tuition fees. You can also apply for a maintenance loan from the Government to help cover your living costs. See
