About the course

This degree gives you a thorough understanding of both mass media and the workings of the PR industry. The media side of the degree gives you the practical skills you need to work confidently in a rapidly evolving field. The marketing and PR side allows you to explore a range of PR activities; develop your business skills; and build your knowledge of marketing practices, particularly around brand management and corporate communications.

This course has the option to be taken over four years which includes a year placement in industry. Undertaking a year in industry has many benefits. You gain practical experience and build your CV, as well as being a great opportunity to sample a profession and network with potential future employers.

There is no tuition fee for the placement year enabling you to gain an extra year of experience for free.

A Degree with a Foundation Year gives you guaranteed entry to an Undergraduate course.

Whether you’re returning to learning and require additional help and support to up-skill, or if you didn’t quite meet the grades to pursue an Undergraduate course, our Degrees with Foundation Year provide a fantastic entry route for you to work towards a degree level qualification.

With our guidance and support you’ll get up to speed within one year, and will be ready to seamlessly progress on to undergraduate study at Bedfordshire.

The Foundation Year provides an opportunity to build up your academic writing skills and numeracy, and will also cover a range of subject specific content to fully prepare you for entry to an Undergraduate degree.

This is an integrated four-year degree, with the foundation year as a key part of the course. You will need to successfully complete the Foundation Year to progress on to the first year of your bachelor’s degree.

Jon is a creative, competent and enthusiastic sports journalism lecturer who joined the ÑÇÉ«ÊÓƵ in May 2014 after five years as course leader of foundation degree journalism at Milton Keynes College.

He started his journalism career as a news reporter for the Leighton Buzzard Observer – covering crime, council news, cinema, music, computer game reviews and features – before progressing to the role of senior reporter at its larger sister newspaper The Milton Keynes Citizen.

What will you study?


Studying our Media, Marketing and Public Relations BA (Hons) course will equip you with the business skills you need to succeed in mass media, marketing and public relations (PR) industries. In areas of marketing, you will be equipped with the fundamental knowledge around digital marketing and analytics including the tools, techniques and challenges within the field in our Introduction to Digital Marketing and Analytics unit. In practical areas of study, you will be able to critically analyse and apply integrated marketing theory in our Topical Marketing Communications Practice unit. More interestingly, our Consumer Behaviour unit will introduce you to theories and trends in the subject to identify how brands communicate with unique audiences and ways to develop successful marketing plans. To familiarise you with the general media landscape, our unit in Understanding Media will allow you to engage with an academic study of the media by considering its various genres, narratives, representation, audiences and ideologies. With a critical approach, you will also consider Contemporary Practices and Debates in The Media in the context of their cultural, political and socio-historical developments.ÌýÌý

In areas of journalism, you will learn to identify newsworthy stories and subsequently write news stories and feature articles for a series of platforms in our Reporting and Writing unit while also considering elements of professionalism and ethics in your work. To support you with this, our unit in The Art and Craft of Journalism will improve your awareness and critical appreciation of fine journalism and in doing so, improve your writing. You will have the opportunity to participate in editing workshops and create long-form pieces of journalism so that you can demonstrate and develop your writing skills. With a focus on digital content creation, you will also be equipped with the digital storytelling skills to record and edit audio and video to be uploaded online in our Introduction to Digital Storytelling unit. It is also crucial that you know how to effectively present your work, and to help you with this our Print and Digital Production and Design unit will allow you to examine practical and aesthetic demands of design and pay particular attention to typography, image selection, sub-editing and web design for newspapers, magazines and online publications.ÌýÌý

If you have a particular interest in audio storytelling, then our Radio, Audio and Podcasting unit will enable you to develop your digital audio editing skills by producing various types of content using studio and location recording techniques. This extends into areas of PR studies where you will learn to use public relations as a tool for reputation management and marketing communications in our Public Relations and Marketing unit. You will integrate concepts from public relations, advertising and digital media to form effective marketing communication strategies. More importantly, you will also have the opportunity in to showcase your knowledge, skills and ideas acquired from this course in our Practical Special Project – CnC unit. Here, you will be able to conduct your project within an area of your interest that is also relevant to your studies, and this may involve exploring topics within radio and audio, media communications, journalism, video or television. Alternatively, you can undertake a major research project into a topic of your interest that is strongly relevant to your field of study in our Dissertation Special Project – CnC unit.ÌýÌý

This is an opportunity for you to showcase a range of skills such as independent thinking, perseverance, responsibility and a high standard of work. To support you in your career, our unit in The Creative Industries will expose you to the different types of work available in the field, strategies to enter the job market and the skill you need for the industry. Furthermore, you will be equipped with the relevant business skills to enter the industry in our Routes to Market unit where you will learn to monetise audio-visual content, how to target and distribute this content to audiences using marketing strategies.ÌýÌý

How will you be assessed?


Students are assessed in a variety of ways. The majority of units are assessed through coursework portfolios essays presentations or in a few cases exams. Presentations and practice-based activities may be developed as group-work although you will be assessed individually.

At level 4 you are assessed on your understanding of the fundamental concepts and disciplines of which media communications marketing and Public Relations are composed.

At level 5 you are assessed on your ability to apply the basic concepts of the disciplines introduced in level 4 to existing controversies and issues on which there is already a body of research and critical opinion.

At level 6 you will be required to demonstrate independent powers of judgement and you will be expected to show an awareness of the major theories and practices of the disciplines. You will progress from well defined briefs to more open-ended and challenging assessments which culminate in the student initiated level 6 project which hopefully will combine the areas of media marketing and public relations.

Careers


Former students now work in communication and PR departments events management agencies magazine publishing journalism media production and research digital media production and teaching.

Some former students continued they studies focusing in areas covered in the undergraduate studies such as TV Production and Events Management.
