About the course
This innovative BSc International Business is designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively manage and lead in the global marketplace. The course offers a distinctive global perspective through specialised units on international trade and investment; international business negotiations; and cross-culture management in business. These components prepare you to navigate the complexities of global markets, making you an invaluable asset to businesses operating on an international scale.

- Our Reuters trading room gives you the chance to experience what it’s like to be on the trading-room floor, reacting to live ‘stock-market’ data and building investment portfolios using data on listed companies from around the world.
- Access to Harvard Business Publishing’s international learning resources, providing immersive simulation software to aid your learning, including Semrush (Marketing), Sage, Refinitiv Eikon and the econometrics software STATA.

This course has the option to be taken over four years which includes a year placement in industry. Undertaking a year in industry has many benefits. You gain practical experience and build your CV, as well as being a great opportunity to sample a profession and network with potential future employers.
There is no tuition fee for the placement year enabling you to gain an extra year of experience for free.

Whether you’re returning to learning and require additional help and support to up-skill, or if you didn’t quite meet the grades to pursue an Undergraduate course, our Degrees with Foundation Year provide a fantastic entry route for you to work towards a degree level qualification.
With our guidance and support you’ll get up to speed within one year, and will be ready to seamlessly progress on to undergraduate study at Bedfordshire.
The Foundation Year provides an opportunity to build up your academic writing skills and numeracy, and will also cover a range of subject specific content to fully prepare you for entry to an Undergraduate degree.
This is an integrated four-year degree, with the foundation year as a key part of the course. You will need to successfully complete the Foundation Year to progress on to the first year of your bachelor’s degree.

What will you study?
Studying our International Business BSc (Hons) course will equip you with the in-depth knowledge and skills on global business operations, business functions and marketing. To provide you with a solid foundation, our International Business unit will introduce managerial and strategic aspects within business, discover international environments in which firms operate and examine conflicts in the business field. In core areas of study, you will learn the fundamentals of financial and managerial accounting in our Accounting for Business unit where you will learn of costing techniques, budgeting processes and how to prepare and interpret account statements. More importantly, you will be introduced to economic theory in our Economics for Business unit and how micro and macroeconomic concepts are relevant to a business context. Furthermore, our unit in Applied Numeracy for Business will give you the confidence to develop the mathematical and numerical skills used for decision making and problem solving for businesses. As a key aspect of business practice, you will be introduced to the Principles of Marketing where you will be equipped with key marketing tools, techniques and concepts around consumer marketing.
Moreover, you will discover the opportunities and challenges present in International Trade and Investment Relations and how this can be used to improve competitiveness and performance of multinational firms. As a business professional, it is also important that you are able to communicate effectively within diverse groups and this is where our Intercultural Competence in Business unit will introduce you to theories around culture, language and communication and how this can be used to develop interpersonal relationships in a business context. On an international level, you will refine these communication skills in our International Business Negotiations unit that will equip you with the negotiation and conflict resolution skills to create and maintain successful relationships in a business context. In areas of management, you will discover the role of strategy in organisational success in our Strategic Management unit and how to develop, evaluate and implement realistic and practical strategies for businesses. To diversify this approach, our Cross-Cultural Management in Business unit will allow you to explore communication theories, working relationships and management behaviour across different cultures and international business environments.
In more specific areas, you will explore how international new ventures are set up in our International New Ventures and Innovation unit, while also examining various approaches to internationalisation and familiarising yourself with creative and innovative business opportunities. Furthermore, you will consider the negative implications on unethical practices in business in our Business Ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility unit while examining various social responsibilities, ethical issues and frameworks and how this affects business decisions. Finally, you will conduct a thorough piece of academic research and/or a practical project using a range of tools and approaches in our Business Project unit. To support you with this, our units in Data and Research Methods for Business and Preparation for Business Project will provide you with the knowledge and skills to conduct research and analyse data in a business context while developing your ability to construct, evidence and reason your work.
Building on your employability skills, our Career in Practice unit will allow you to apply your learning in a project of your choice. This will enable you to experience what it is like in your chosen field of work while receiving insights from local employers and industry professionals. Furthermore, you will be encouraged to take a reflective approach in our Continuing Professional Development unit. Through engaging with psychometric tests and learning activities, you will better understand your strengths and weaknesses that will inform your professional development. Additionally, you will also have the opportunity to undertake a Professional Practice Year (Marketing) for you to gain career-related experience. To prepare you for this, our unit in Beginning your Professional Business Journey will help to ease your transition into the workplace and provide an insight into professional business environments.
How will you be assessed?
This course uses a range of assessment types and methods including essays and reports, portfolios, research proposals and exams. Assessment focuses on tasks that develop vocational skills, underpinned by subject knowledge, requiring higher levels of cognition in the later years of the course. Some group work is included at each level since being able to function as part of a team is a critical skill for international business, and assessments are used to develop your employability as a graduate going into the international market place.
Support to enable you to submit your best work is provided in a variety of ways including briefings in class, supporting materials provided through the virtual learning environment, drop in sessions with the Study Hub team, subject-specific Academic Librarians and individual tutors. In addition, extensive online supporting materials are available.
