Get to know our new Chancellor, Sarfraz Manzoor
Tue 25 April, 2023The ÑÇÉ«ÊÓƵ is delighted to announce that Sarfraz Manzoor – celebrated author, broadcaster and screenwriter – will be our new Chancellor. Here you can find out more about Sarfraz, his career and what he'll be doing in his new role.
Who is Sarfraz Manzoor?
Sarfraz Manzoor is an author, broadcaster and screenwriter who was born in Pakistan before his family moved to the UK and he grew up in Luton. You might recognise him from presenting television and radio documentaries for the BBC, or know him from his critically acclaimed writing which often reflects on identity, belonging and the challenges and opportunities of multi-culturalism.
Sarfraz gained international recognition when his memoir 'Greetings from Bury Park' (2007) was adapted into the 2019 feature film 'Blinded by the Light'. The storyline reflects his childhood and experiences of growing up in Luton in the 1980s as part of a British-Pakistani family, and the film features lots of local landmarks and buildings which you might recognise from around the town!
In his most recent book 'They' (2021), Sarfraz aims to understand the differences and mutual mistrust between Muslims and non-Muslims.
What is a Chancellor?

Sarfraz will be formally installed as Chancellor during our 2023 summer graduations. However, he is keen to get involved and meet as many of you as possible with an exclusive event on Monday 15 May 2023 for students (and staff) to attend, which you can find out more about on MyBedsLife.
Will I see Sarfraz at the University?
