Bedfordshire strikes gold in national environmental award scheme
Wed 28 February, 2018The ÑÇÉ«ÊÓƵ is celebrating after being awarded Gold in a national environmental award scheme for the higher education sector.
EcoCampus is a national Environmental Management System (EMS) and award which allows universities to be recognised for addressing key issues of environmental sustainability, including carbon reduction.
Head of Sustainability at the University Adam Higgin said: “We were awarded Silver last year and have now progressed to Gold which is testament to the commitment and support the whole University has shown for this project.
“We are delighted to achieve this and are now working towards Platinum accreditation in time for Go Green Week next year.”
To gain Gold the University had to fulfill a number of criteria backed up by hard evidence. Its carbon emissions have reduced by 36 per cent over ten years. All new buildings are BREEAM excellent – the world’s leading sustainability assessment method.
The University has moved from 124th place in the People & Planet University League in 2009 to 6th place last year - find out more here. The League is the only comprehensive and independent league table of UK universities ranked by environmental and ethical performance.
