Wed 27 January, 2016A new book by ÑÇÉ«ÊÓƵ Senior Lecturer in Social Work challenges commonly held assumptions on information sharing in child welfare cases.
Strengthening Child Protection: sharing information in multi-agency settings by Dr Kellie Thompson, comes after several high profile Serious Case Reviews into the tragic deaths of children, including Victoria Climbie, Peter Connelly and Daniel Pelka. It explains how information sharing has become a moral and political imperative for safeguarding the welfare of children.
Commenting on the book, author Dr Thompson also a practising local authority social worker in children’s services said: “The stock vocabulary of ‘information sharing’ is considered in far too simplistic terms. It is a task that needs to be understood in context. Simplistic policy mantras miss some of the very important complexities of how professionals work together in making sense of what information is and why and when it matters.”
She explained: “This book helps us to understand what prompts information sharing, how we get it right and why it is so important.”
‘Strengthening Child Protection’ discusses how risks to children are clear and that sharing information with other professionals is an easy and clear straight forward process.
End of chapter questions prompt reflection and ensure direct practice relevance. The book also includes a foreword by respected academic in children and families social work, Professor Sue White.
