About the course

This course will introduce you to core pedagogic theories and approaches while encouraging your critical reflection on your professional practice.

You will develop your key skills in teaching, learning and assessment practice. You'll also be part of a learning community of academic professionals enhancing your ability to embed equality, diversity and inclusivity and ethical awareness in all aspects of your practice.

You'll stimulate a scholarship of teaching and learning through encouraging you to research and disseminate your own professional practice.

What will you study?


Assessment, Feedback And The Curriculum In Higher Education (Afche)

This unit will provide you with underpinning pedagogy, contemporary theory and reflective models, alongside structured opportunities to put into practice these theories, and reflect on both their implementation, and your own developing professional practice.

The unit aims to enable you to: 

·  advance your critical understanding of principles and approaches in assessment and feedback, and curriculum design in Higher Education.

·  apply and reflect upon pedagogic theory and quality assurance frameworks related to assessment, feedback and curriculum design to your practice.

·  develop and reflect upon your skills in delivering effective, inclusive, high quality, curricula to learners, in order to support their learning.

 

Communicating With Professional And Academic Communities

This unit asks you to complete a critical enquiry into your practice and produce a piece of work suitable for dissemination to your community(ies) of practice.

The aims of this unit are to: 

·  introduce the scholarship of teaching and learning and its relevance to your practice;

· encourage critical enquiry into a chosen area of your current practice

·  format your enquiry into a piece of work suitable for dissemination;

·  explore the concept of Communities of Practice

·  identify opportunities for communication with your identified COPs as well as wider dissemination of your work

·  explore principles of effective academic communication;

Developing Effective Learning And Teaching In Higher Education

This unit will support you to develop your knowledge, skills, confidence and professional practice all through the lens of a critical reflection to better enable you to: 

•    Develop your critical understanding of the principles, theories and debates of teaching and learning in Higher Education and relate these to your own practice 

•    Develop and apply effective and inclusive teaching and learning design, pedagogy, support and evaluation strategies to improve your teaching practice 

•    Engage in peer review of teaching and supporting learning

•    Critically draw on key theories from literature, peer observation and student feedback to reflect on the effectiveness of own teaching design and delivery and seek to put steps in place to enhance it  

•    Enhance academic rigour and explore and evidence the necessary elements of the United Kingdom Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF) in relation to one’s own practice 

•    Evaluate and plan for your development as a teacher and/or supporter of learning

How will you be assessed?


This is a practice-based course with the teaching and learning centred on your own professional academic practice. Scheduled synchronous sessions (online via Collaborate/VoIP tool), guided, asynchronous, collaborative and independent learning activities are designed to develop your professional practice and provide exposure to a variety of different teaching, learning and assessment methods, techniques, technologies and environments. Relevant research, scholarship and pedagogy provide a sound evidence-based underpinning to your reflections and learning.

Learning is experiential. You will be asked to apply the learning from your online provision to your practice and vice versa. You will have a variety of opportunities to contextualise and apply what you learn on the course. You will be given the opportunity to experience, discuss, share and reflect throughout the course. The course will utilise and model a range of evidence-based approaches which you will experience as a student.

You'll be able to transfer and apply your theory knowledge to the classroom, so it reflects positively in your teaching practice. You'll adopt an autonomous and professional approach to your role as HE practitioner and you'll participate in the development of a supportive and co-operative HE learning environment.
