About the Luton campus

Our Luton campus is located right in the heart of the town centre boasting our brand-new STEM Building, seven-storey Library and Postgraduate & CPD Centre, as well as an array of fantastic modern facilities to support each of the courses on offer.

These include the Media Arts Centre hosting our broadcast television and digital radio studios, extensive STEM Laboratories & Workshops, a Moot Court, Business Pods, Healthcare Simulation Suites and our Campus Gym. For our Art & Design students we have the Alexon Building - a former fashion house based in the centre of Luton's Cultural Quarter, which contains studio space spanning across three floors with each course having their own designated areas including the fashion and photography studios.

At the heart of our Luton campus is the Campus Centre where alongside a large lecture theatre and study rooms you can find our Careers Centre, Student Information Desk and other Student Support Services. It is also the place to build your social life, with Café Neo and our Students’ Union in the Metro Bar & Kitchen, home to Starbucks Coffee and a range of tasty food & drink while hosting regular live music, DJ nights and student events.

Media Arts Centre

Our £5.5m Media Arts Centre has state-of-the-art facilities for students on our journalism, media and writing degrees.

Facilities include broadcast television and digital radio studios, digital video editing suites, electronic newsrooms, white space studio, multimedia suites, and additional studios for online and design work.

STEM Labs

Set out over four-storeys the 6000m2 of teaching space features cutting edge facilities including four computer laboratories and workshops for subjects such as automotive engineering, cyber-security and robotics, along with three large teaching labs, and four specialist containment labs.

BedsSU -ÌýMetro Bar &ÌýKitchen

The Metro Bar & Kitchen is home to BedsSU which by day proudly servesÌýStarbucks CoffeeÌýalong with a range of other beverages, sandwiches and snacks. It’s a great space for socialising with friends, catching up on some coursework or taking a well-deserved lunch break.

By night the venue becomes the place to be, with a variety of student events such as pub quizzes, live music and various themed club nights. Evening food includes delicious freshly made pizzas and pasta dishes.

Luton Gym

The Aspire Gyms offer a range of affordable membership options giving students exclusive use of a convenient campus-based fitness facility.

The Luton gym facilitates state of the art cardiovascular equipment with smartphone compatibility as well as an extensive range of fixed resistance machines and a small free weights area. Changing rooms with showers and lockers are available for members to use.

Art & Design Studios

The main studio space spans across three floors and is shared by all years with each course having their own designated areas including the expansive fashion studio and the photography studio. This type of learning environment is reflective of studios found across the art and design industry, maintaining a strong studio culture and helping to develop your communication skills and work collaboratively.

Campus Library

The Luton Campus Library set over seven storeys offers students access to our extensive range of physical and digital resources with 300,000+ books & 80,000+ ebooks.

PCs are provided on each level for students to use offering access to a wide range of applications as well as access to silent-study rooms, group-work areas, presentation-practice rooms and a café.

Business Pods

Our Business Pods are specially created teaching spaces designed like modern offices rather than traditional classrooms.

With brainstorming and boardroom areas and an IT suite, they simulate a professional working environment allowing students to work in small groups on real business problems and take a hands-on role in becoming a junior executive.

Healthcare Simulation Suites

Our clinical skills and simulation suites allow for simulated scenarios having been designed to provide invaluable learning opportunities to observe, develop and test how healthcare professionals work together and interact with their environment and equipment.

The suite includes a ward area that can be used as an intensive care unit, A&E or Maternity Unit; an anaesthetic prep room and an operating theatre with scrub room.

Moot Court

Set out like a real-life law court, our Moot Court gives aspiring Lawyers a taste of their future career – with a podium, lectern and seating for opposing counsel and up to three judges.

Moots can be recorded with the ability for students to select one of five views of the court and with microphones for judges and counsel. You can play the recordings back through the projection system.

Sports Therapy & Rehabilitation Labs

Students can practise sports massage skills and clinical practices on real participants in our laboratories.

Equipped with facilities for physiology, biomechanics and sports therapy, students will gain a taste of industry life to prepare them for employment.

 

Campus Centre

The Luton Campus Centre holds a wide range of facilities including the main reception, careers centre, the campus gallery space & Café Neo on the ground floor. There's a large central lecture theatre as well as a range of study rooms & breakout spaces on the upper floors.

It's also the place to build your social life with our modern Students’ Union in the Metro Bar & Kitchen; home to tasty food & drink and hosting regular live music, DJ nights and student events.

 

STEM Building

Opened in Autumn 2019 by Lord Robert Winston our new £40m STEM building is home to hundreds of students studying Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics courses.

Its cutting edge facilities provides four computer laboratories; workshops for subjects such as automotive engineering, cyber-security and robotics, along with three large teaching labs, and four specialist containment labs.

 

School of Art and Design

The University has invested nearly £3m into a new building for Art and Design students.

As well as state-of-the-art fashion equipment, the building boasts a digital studio with laser cutters and 3D printers, a photographic studio and darkroom facilities, numerous workshop areas, dedicated studio spaces and open plan studios.

 

Campus Library

The modern Luton library at the Luton campus has everything you would expect from a world-class university – and more.

Opened in summer 2016 its seven storeys is a landmark building for the Luton campus, offering students silent-study rooms, group-work areas, presentation-practice rooms and a café.

 

Postgraduate & CPD Centre

The Postgraduate & CPD Centre is home to our University's postgraduate courses and continuing professional development (CPD) students from industry.

The new building has an exciting and modern atmosphere with a range of lecture theatres (including two Harvard-style lecture theatres), informal learning spaces, quiet study areas as well as a café and large event venue area on the ground floor.

Luton location

Luton town is packed full of cultural diversity. It has plenty of bars and restaurants, an 11-screen cinema, bowling lanes, a shopping mall and indoor market, football stadium and other sports facilities, and a vibrant arts and cultural scene based around the Cultural Quarter.

There are excellent transport links to the rest of the UK and Europe. Luton lies just 50km north of London - the capital is only a 30 minute train journey away. In addition, London Luton Airport is only 2.5km from the main Luton campus.

Luton’s surrounding area boasts a wealth of parks and open spaces including ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, Dunstable Downs, Wardown Park and Luton Hoo stately home.

From the M1 Junction 11 southbound

  • Exit junction 11 and turn left onto Dunstable Road
  • Follow the road until you reach a roundabout – taking the third exit to Chaul End Lane
  • Follow this road until you reach a roundabout – taking the first exit to the A505 (Hatters Way)
  • Continue along this road (following signs for the University)
  • At the double roundabout – go straight over both – along Dunstable Road
  • Continue along the A505 (heading straight over the crossroads to Stuart Street)
  • At the road about go straight over onto the Park Viaduct
  • Continue along the viaduct until you reach the roundabout – taking the first exit
  • You are now on St Mary’s Road (front of the University’s Luton campus) – and can use local town centre car parks

From M1 Junction 10 northbound

  • Exit junction 10 and take the second exit to the A1081 (Airport Way)
  • Exit along the slip road and continue along London Road
  • Continue along London road, heading straight over at the crossroads – to Castle Street
  • Continue straight and at the round about take third exit on to the Park Viaduct
  • Continue along the viaduct until you reach the round about – taking the first exit
  • You are now on St Mary’s Road (front of the University’s Luton campus) – and can use local town centre car parks

From the A1

  • Leave the A1 at Junction 8 and take the A602 to Hitchin
  • At the first roundabout in Hitchin take the third exit and at the next roundabout take the first exit, following the A505 to Luton town centre
  • At the roundabout take the first exit into Gipsy Lane
  • Proceed over two mini-roundabouts into Windmill Road and over the next roundabout take the second exit into St Mary's Road.
  • You are now on St Mary’s Road (front of the University’s Luton campus) – and can use local town centre car parks

From the A6

  • Drive along the A6 towards Luton. At the traffic lights (with the Leaside Hotel and Landsdowne Club on your left), turn left on to Hucklesby Way
  • Continue straight over the traffic lights – continue straight on
  • At the roundabout, turn right on to Hitchin Road
  • Continue straight – approaching a double roundabout
  • You are now on St Mary’s Road (front of the University’s Luton campus) – and can use local town centre car parks

From car park to campus

  • Parking is available at the The Mall shopping centre. Once you have parked your car follow the pedestrian signs to the shops and take the lift to Level M.
  • Exit lift and walk forwards through the shopping centre. Take the first left walk way and walk until you reach the Mall information point. Take the left hand fork and follow walk way past New Look on your right and Timpson and the market on your left.
  • You will arrive at a set of stairs on your right and another lift. Take lift or stairs to ground floor and exit Mall.
  • Cross the road at the pedestrian crossing with St Mary's Church on your left.
  • Follow the footpath forward past the church and you'll arrive at the Campus Centre. Reception is immediately inside.

connect Luton with Bedford (25 min), London (34 min to St Pancras International; Farringdon; City Thameslink; Blackfriars; and 50 min to London Bridge), East Croydon (64 min), Gatwick Airport (80 min) and Brighton (2 h).

Thameslink serves Luton's three railway stations - Luton Airport Parkway (for London Luton Airport), Luton (this is the closest to the main, University Square campus) and Leagrave.

Luton is also served by which offers and to London St Pancras.

From station to campus

Via The Mall

  • Walk out of the main station entrance and walk straight ahead keeping the bus stops and Starbucks on your right, and a car park on your left.
  • Walk towards town centre (Bute Street) where you will see the Hat Factory arts centre on your right, The Mall shopping centre will be in front of you.
  • Enter the shopping centre, go up the escalator and take a left at the top. Walk through the shopping centre until you reach Debenhams, turn left and then right and walk towards the exit, with the indoor market on your left.
  • Exit the shopping centre via the stairs or the lifts. Cross the road at the pedestrian crossing with St Mary's Church on your left.
  • Follow the footpath through the church grounds and you'll arrive at the Campus Centre. Reception is immediately inside.

Avoiding The Mall

  • Walk out of the main station entrance and walk straight ahead keeping the bus stops and Starbucks on your right, and a car park on your left.
  • Walk towards town centre (Bute Street) where you will see the Hat Factory arts centre on your right.
  • Take the first left (Guildford Street) and continue walking to the end of the road and then turn right
  • Keep walking until you reach traffic lights (AVIS car rental and the Mall multi-storey car park will be on your right). This is Church Street
  • Turn right and you will see St Mary's Church and the ÑÇÉ«ÊÓƵ on your left
  • Cross the road at the pedestrian crossing with St Mary's Church on your left.
  • Follow the footpath through the church grounds and you'll arrive at the Campus Centre. Reception is immediately inside.

Luton has some traffic-free routes for cyclists. The town is on Route 6 of the National Cycle Network. A recent addition is the route which runs parallel with the Luton to Dunstable busway.

On campus there is parking for bicycles outside the Park Street entrance, the Campus Centre and the Postgraduate and CPD Centre.

If you are travelling to an Open Day by car, please be aware that the University does not have on-campus parking. Being in a town centre location, there are plenty of public car parks, all within a short walking distance of the Luton campus, which operate by pay and display.
